Making stuff makes me happy. I <3 making things…really anything! Since learning to sew at age 5 {thanks, Mom!}, sewing remains a creative outlet to which I return for simple fixes + fashion fun.
I like making aromatherapy eye pillows because they’re 1} easy, 2} relaxing to use in studio or for naptime, and 3} make great gifts for private yoga clients, for birthdays, + holidays, and 4} you can use upcycled materials.
For other yoga teachers –studio owners or travelling teachers –homemeade aromatherapy eye pillows {with a removable silk casement} are a way to make your classes more memorable + more enjoyable for your students.
Below is the video {+ text} how-to for making your own aromatherapy eye pillows. You only need basic sewing skills, an old {clean} t-shirt, some washable silk {like a secondhand shirt or scarf}, and the ‘filler.’
Filler for eye pillows:
Equal parts dried lavendar flowers, dried roses, oatmeal, and rice. You may omit the flowers if you like + use essential oils instead if you prefer. My favorites are…
lavendar {relaxing}
rose {calming}
cedarwood {grounding}
rosewood {focusing}
sandalwood {harmonizing}

Here’s the step by step for the eye pillows {makes ~4}
What you need:
1 clean t-shirt {for eye pillows}
1 silk shirt or skirt {for removable eye pillow casement}
cardboard rectangle {3.5 inches by 8.5 inches}
1 cup each dried lavendar flowers, dried rose buds, rolled oats, rice
8 drops lavendar essential oil {optional}
How to make the eye pillows:
Fold the t-shirt in half placing the pattern vertically along the seam. Cut out a rectangle 7 inches by 8.5 inches {this is what you get when you fold the t-shirt in half}. Cut 3 more rectangles just the same.
Sew along the vertical seam, then sew one of the shorter sides. You know have a tube with an opening at the top.
Turn right-side out and fill with ~1/4 of the mixture from above {flowers, oats, rice}. Pillows should be ~3/4 full.
Sew the top together, securing the contents inside.
How to make the eye pillow casement:
Fold your silk material so that you can cut a rectangle 20 inches by 3.5 inches {You do this by placing the pattern on the folded silk with the seam at the short side}.
With right sides together, fold the silk in half lengthwise with 4-5 inches remaining at the top. Fold the top down so you’ve created a pouch.
Pin + sew along the vertical edges. Turn right side out + stuff with eye pillows.
Voila. You’re done ;)
