Why do we strive for balance? Everything in nature cycles through periods of fruiting and fallow so why are we so preoccupied with an even keel, same-same mentality? In the health and wellness coaching field, it seems we’re even more preoccupied with achieving balance for ourselves & our clients than in most of the other healing professions.
So what does balance mean?
Balance doesn’t have to mean same-same all the time…can’t it be a manifestation – in our own lives – of the inherent cycles all in the natural world exhibit?
Balance, then, can be appreciating & accepting the contradictions & organic cycles of your life. Going with the flow. Allowing enough room for crazy contradictions, invigorating imbalance, & a little cognitive dissonance.
Invigorating imbalance is…
Trees bare against a pearly winter sky
Cold wind whipping my face
Hot chai on a February day
Iced coffee in July
Reading into the wee hours
Knitting. All day.
Grapefruits galore in January
Fresh raspberries in August
Hot summer sun on my skin
Toasty warm woolen mittens
A 5 am yoga practice
Sunday morning sleeping in
Leaves to pile up & play in
Puddles to slosh through
Summer storms & hazy skies
Afternoon naps
Afternoon runs
Spring flowers & buzzing bees
Fresh figs drizzled with lavendar honey
Life is bodacious, everchanging, constantly in flux…. and so are we. Life is anything but one-note. One of my favorite authors, Toni Morrison, offers a literary example of this concept of going with the flow in the character Pilate {the pivotal matriarch in Song of Solomon}: when the family gets a dozen eggs –a special treat –that’s all they eat until they’re gone, soft-boiled & delicious.
Ayurveda recognizes that the human organism is a mirror of the universal organism: as for the macrocosm, so for the microcosm. As we approach the changing of the seasons, Ayurveda asks us to take the time to quietly reflect, to rest, & to allow our bodies the opportunity to appreciate the time of change. Usually, we do this by eating easily digestible foods like kitchari, taking a break from caffeine & other stimulants, & giving our minds a break from their usual frenetic pace.

This was spot on for me this morning. Striving for balance for the past couple of decades has been an on going process for me. Tapas (zeal) is my strong suit but Brahmacarya (moderation) is my weakest. I read your Blog through Twitter in the middle of my morning RPMs. Appropriately I will accept my present condition (ill), learn from it and let go to enjoy the process. Some time I need to just nurture myself. Thanks for sharing.
