5 Obstacles to Positive Change

by Kellie on January 27, 2012

1. Current habits

{What You’re Doing Right Now That Ain’t Workin’}

“If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.”

~Tony Robbins

Nothing keeps us where we are like what we do. Lemme say that another way: to change our behavior we have to take a hard look at how we’re behaving. Profound, I know. If you’re serious about creating health, living wellness, & celebrating your radiant self, It’s worth investigating what you actually DO day-to-day that either blocks or benefits your personal health. Our habits define us and we can either use them to leverage our transformational growth or continue to use them as a crutch.

Consider one of the most popular health goals: lose weight. Sounds easy enough, right? {wrong!} Let’s talk habits that may block our ability to achieve that goal. Numero uno habit to break: overeating. {Numero dos, get off your butt & start moving!}. Although there are many possible causes for overweight and obesity, being above your ideal weight is usually linked to putting too much food {or too much calorically-dense food} in your mouth without adjusting your physical activity accordingly. {Just for now, let’s forget about the other reasons one could express overweight, such as genetic disorders, physical limitations, or physiological causes}. As we age, our caloric needs shift subtly; generally our metabolism slows slightly resulting in less energy expenditure {energy out} and a decreased need for energy in {calories, food, you get the pic}. Unless we pair that subtle shift with appropriate “energy out” techniques, those extra “energy in” calories land right where we don’t want them: as extra adiposity {that’s fat, folks}. If it’s your habit to overeat at every meal or to snack on XYZ late in the evening or to avoid physical activity like the plague, you might consider the possibility of changing one of those habits in order to support your goal of losing weight.

2. Attitude towards self

{Are You Radically Self-loving or Hatefully Self-loathing?}

“You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

–A.A. Milne

How many times have you doomed yourself to fail before your health goal even got off the ground? Telling yourself you “are” a certain way and you’ll “never change” is tantamount to shooting your health goal right in the foot. People can change. It simply takes dedication, a shift in focus, and a whole lotta critical evaluation of WHY it’s so friggin’ hard!! Is it challenging to change? YES. It is POSSIBLE to change. Absofrigginlutely. But you wanna know the fastest way to derail your positive change? Tell yourself you can’t change, or you aren’t good enough, or you’ll never {whatever}. Because you CAN and you WILL change for the better if you start from a place of self-acceptance & self-love.

3. Social influences

{Where Yo B*tches At?}

“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it’s time to pause and reflect.”

-Mark Twain

Humans are social creatures. We’re wired that way. It’s a good thing….mostly. Social pressure can help leverage us to be a better version of ourselves. Yet we all know that peer pressure can discourage brave, striking-out-on-your own action, too. Moreover, in this age of in your face, up to the minute updates on every person in your life {including your high school boyfriend, your college roommate, and your first boss} it’s easy to lose yourself –and your higher, positive purpose –in the details. Who you’re hanging with {physically or virtually} has a HUGE impact on how you see yourself right now, what you feel you can achieve, & the image of your future self you’re nurturing. So get real choosy. Hang out with people that nourish you, inspire you, motivate you, educate you, share positivity & banish negativity. Unfriend those negative naysayers & move on. Get yourself a Peeps Squad that makes you feel good about yourself – right now, today. Massive {dis}information overwhelm combined with the next obstacle on our list {cripplin’ comparison} keep you stuck where you are –instead of making huge strides towards where {and who} you want to be.

4. Cripplin’ Comparison

{Why Ya Trying To Be A Petunia When You’re A Rose?}

My personal demon….this is where I get stuck time and time again. The leverage to re-create something good in my life sometimes requires just too much effort to overcome my fear that I’m not as good as so-and-so or I’ll never be like so-and-so or I’m not cool enough, like so-and-so. Before you even try something new, you’ve set yourself up for a big fat pile o’ failure. So instead of branching out, reaching out, and really stretching yourself, you choose to stay small. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. But you CAN look better, feel better, & live better right now being your authentic, fabulous, uniquely-gifted, & irreplaceable YOU.

5. Stinkin’ Thinkin’

{You Are What You Think About All Day}

Ok, you got me….again! I get stuck on this one, too! Seriously, I’m a born-n-bred pessimist {gasp!}. It’s true, I used to be the worst stinkin’ thinker of them all! Ask my momma. You want to know the good news, now? YOU CAN CHANGE THAT STINKIN’ THINKIN.’ I sure did. And, yes, for those of us that are a little further down the pessimistic path {ahem}, it’s a little more challenging. Believe me when I tell you, YOU ARE NOT A LOST CAUSE. Yes, you may be your own worst enemy, but there ain’t no lost causes here. You know those thoughts you have every day? They’re the same ones you had yesterday & the day before that & the day before that. You know the easiest way to change yourself? CHANGE YOUR THOUGHTS.
